  15. Verdict on Papandreou

  17. <p>     After 10 months of hearings, more than 100 witnesses and
  18. 50,000 pages of documents, the epic trial of former socialist
  19. Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou in the $210 million Bank of
  20. Crete scandal came to an end last week. The colossal tangle
  21. helped topple his flamboyant eight-year rule in 1989, but the
  22. court acquitted him.

  24. <p>     The special tribunal concluded that prosecutors had not
  25. proved their case. They had charged that Papandreou ordered
  26. state companies to deposit funds in the private bank at a time
  27. when its owner was suspected of embezzlement. Papandreou was
  28. also accused of taking bribes from the bank owner.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     The acquittal left Greeks little closer to the truth. But
  31. it did pump up the political jousting. After the verdict,
  32. Papandreou called for new elections to unseat the New Democracy
  33. government's small parliamentary majority.
